Seven Smokin’ Hot Ways to Explore Fort Wilderness with Your Sweetheart

More often than not, Disney’s Fort Wilderness conjures up postcard-perfect images of family swims, children on bikes, and dads pushing strollers after late nights at the park. Yes, it’s dandy-good, wholesome fun. But what Fort Wilderness is less recognized for is its place as one of the most romantic – even sultry – places in all of Walt Disney World.

Whether it’s Valentine’s Day, anniversary, or just a weekly date night, here’s some ways to supremely spice things up. Continue reading “Seven Smokin’ Hot Ways to Explore Fort Wilderness with Your Sweetheart”

Homemade Marshmallows: The S’more, the Merrier

For a kicked-up glamping weekend, we like to make our own marshmallows ahead of time. Sure, there are lots of places to buy these fresh confectionaries these days, but I’ve gotta save that money for some certain $200 per night campsites. Another issue is that some of these homemade use all wholesome ingredients. While this is delightful, marshmallows without corn syrup (or those that use egg whites) just won’t melt properly on the campfire. Continue reading “Homemade Marshmallows: The S’more, the Merrier”

Seven Ways to Save at Disney’s Fort Wilderness in 2021

In 1986, Walt Disney World held a special promotion at Fort Wilderness called Florida Fling.  A mere $65 got a visiting couple two nights of preferred camping, two trail rides, two tickets to Discovery Island, and unlimited bike and canoe rentals!  But long gone are these bargain days of discounts that made Fort Wilderness camping a middle-class haven. During peak times such as Christmas, a campsite alone near the Meadows Recreation area can cost more than $ 1900 a week. For the many of us who think Fort Wilderness is still worth it, here’s some ways to cut your costs in half or more. Continue reading “Seven Ways to Save at Disney’s Fort Wilderness in 2021”

2020 at Fort Wilderness: Highlights of a Very UnNormal Year

Imagine having gone to sleep in February 2020 and waking up in July in Fort Wilderness. Why are people wearing masks on golf carts? Why are all those loops completely empty? What’s that strange silence at night? What do you mean there’s no breakfast buffet? Continue reading “2020 at Fort Wilderness: Highlights of a Very UnNormal Year”

Georgia’s Newest KOA is a Blue Ridge Mountain Gem

It was one of those impromptu weekend trips last month that took us to the brand new KOA in Blue Ridge, Georgia. Previously, trips to our favorite mountain village required a stay in a cabin or camping in an adjacent county. So we shouldn’t have been at all surprised when our three nights were finished and we desperately wanted to stay longer. Continue reading “Georgia’s Newest KOA is a Blue Ridge Mountain Gem”

20 Favorite Gifts for the Disney Glamper – 2020 Edition

Just because it’s a weird Christmas doesn’t mean it can’t be beautiful and fabulous and wonderful. Oddly, this year has given me some badly needed perspective, and I’m looking more forward to buying gifts more than I have in a long time. So here’s our 2020 list of carefully-curated gems. These run the gamut of budget friendly to a little indulgent, but I’ve avoided sheer extravagance (brand new Airstreams and Disney annual passes, for example). Southern Soul Thanksgiving: Old-Fashioned Cornbread Dressing

Well, no need to worry about the turkey this year. Not with an oven that will do anything your father tells it to do. ~Carousel of Progress, WDW

One of the decadent delights of life I’m grateful for this Thanksgiving is good ol’ southern cornbread dressing. If I had my druthers, that stovetop mess people cram in the turkey would never cross my path again. And this version is not only fairly easy (even if you’re glamping), but it the best grandma version ever. Every time I take a bite, with a little cranberry sauce wedged on the fork, it takes me back to being eight years old. Continue reading “Southern Soul Thanksgiving: Old-Fashioned Cornbread Dressing”

Ten Little Perfect Picnic Spots in WDW’s Fort Wilderness

There’s nothing like an old-fashioned picnic to heal those social distancing blues. Over the last few months, I’ve relished sunset tailgates on the beach, appetizers on top of a parking garage under a full moon, and sushi beside a scenic railway in rural Georgia. Oh, and I’ve had homemade Chicken Divan and S’Mores Pie riverside at the Fort Wilderness Meadows. Under that dreamy old oak tree. DisTwitter Reacts as Fort Wilderness Dinner Show Cast Gets the Hoop Dee Boot

Well, maybe we shouldn’t be so surprised. With the pandemic seemingly on track to get worse before we’re out of the dark forest, live entertainment in tight spaces seems like a faded memory. And now WDW is releasing the cast members of its Hoop Dee Doo dinner show in Fort Wilderness. This feels almost as bad is if Animal Kingdom no longer had a Lion King show. Or Star Wars had no Jedi Training Academy.

Oh wait . . .
