With about 400 cabins at Fort Wilderness, there are absolutely some that are better than others. As the interiors are consistent (basically a very well-equipped mobile home with a nifty log facade), the differences really come down to location. Here’s a list of our very favorites.
CABIN 2501: Almost Poolside
This may be my favorite cabin of all. It is closer than any other cabin to the Wilderness Pool, which also houses a laundry area. A direct view of the pool is not possible because of the pool building that is situated between the pool and this loop. Nevertheless, it’s about a 45-second walk from cabin porch to splash time. And because it’s right there at the beginning of the loop, it’s also very convenient to the bus stop.
So, where exactly is the pool in relation to this cabin? Just through the trees on the backside. Cabin 2503, right next door, is almost as good as this one.
When my children were smaller, I would have probably begged or bartered for this site. Now, for those who don’t care about swimming or would prefer a lot of privacy, then this one’s not for you.
CABIN 2533: decorator’s dream
Just across the loop street from Cabin 2501 is 2533, which means it is also extremely close to the Wilderness Pool. What I love about this one is that it is quite unique in how it sits on a corner when one first enters this loop. It’s actually turned at a different angle, which gives it a front and center view.
Another unusual feature is the amount of foliage and landscaping in front of this one. With its high visibility and abundance of greenery, it should be a top choice for those who enjoy Halloween or holiday decorating.
CABIN 2665: Wilderness pool view
Like the first two above, this one has the advantage of being in extremely close proximity to the Wilderness Pool. However, this one is across the street in Loop 2600. While the walk is a few steps more, its view is superior. It’s also right next to the bus stop.
CABIN 2806: ENCHANTED HIDEAWAY
I think if I were on a honeymoon or a secret romantic rendezvous, this might be my cabin of choice. It just has a more enchanted look than almost any other with a more cozy, hideaway feeling.
Check out this back yard. I can completely imagine enjoying a love potion libation relaxing out here. See what I mean?
CABIN 2318: wildlife paradise?
So these days, you’re not really supposed to fish in the creeks except in designated areas. But if you could, this cabin sits right on the canal. With the waterway, naturally comes an abundance of deer, waterfowl, and other enchanted critters.
And here’s that backyard view with the canal. I like the sunny, large area in the back while the cabin itself is well shaded.
CABIN 2215: Most convenient
What I like least about the cabins in general is their remote feeling and far distance from either the Meadows or Settlement areas. Honestly, I’m a Loop 100 (Settlement) or Loop 900 (Meadows) kind of camper. But this cabin is the closest of all to the Meadows Trading Post and Pool and the main four-way stop is right in its backyard. It’s an easy five-minute walk for me to the Meadows from the four-way stop.
CABIN 2222: best back yard
This one is Captain Bacon’s favorite because the large expanse of green grass reminds him of Augusta National. Not only could you host an entire soccer tournament in your backyard, but you can also clearly see all the comings and goings at the main entrance/exit of Fort Wilderness.
And here’s a view of the cabin itself.
CABINs 118 and 120: Most elusive
Right on the edge of camping Loop 100 are two cabins interspersed with all of the RV and tent sites. These are far away from all of the other cabins, but a 30-second walk from the marina, Trail’s End, and the Settlement Trading Post. It has been suggested that these are reserved for VIPs, but when they are available, you may have luck getting one upon arrival if you ask. As unique and popular as they are, you will absolutely need luck to have a shot.
How to get the cabin you want
WDW Resorts does not allow you to pick either your campsite or your cabin before arrival. However, after making your reservation online (or through your travel agent), you can call and ask them to put a note about your specific requests (loops or actual cabin numbers).
Once you arrive, you can find out your cabin assignment (or you may have done this through early check-in.). If you’re not happy with your assignment, have a list handy of other ones you might prefer. If they are available, then you may be accommodated. Of course, this is easier during slower times of the year. Note that for many of our top eight, the one next door to it will likely have similar positive characteristics. Good luck!
