After a two-month closure due to COVID-19, Walt Disney World announced plans to reopen the Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground on June 22, 2020. This comes in concert with the long-awaited news of park reopenings beginning on July 11. Reopening plans are contingent on the final approval (expected) of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
the fortunate few
In a phased reopening approach, new resort reservations won’t be accepted until a later time with the exception of Disney Vacation Club members. In other words, if you already have a summer reservation, count yourself lucky. Likewise, reserved park ticket sales will also be temporarily limited to those with existing tickets and annual passholders in the earliest phases.
safety first
Much like Shanghai Disneyland, which opened on May 11, Walt Disney World Parks and Resorts will have limitations on capacity and measures in place for enhanced protection. These include social distancing and intensified sanitation measures. All guests (aged 3 years and up) will be required to wear face coverings, and will have their temperatures checked upon entry to parks.
I realize the wearing of face masks stirs up controversy, but in my view, this is the only way to keep everyone maximally protected. If this requirement weren’t in place, there’s no way I’d step foot in a park.
My favorite meme of late points out that if you hate wearing a face mask, you really won’t enjoy wearing a ventilator. While more details regarding Fort Wilderness are not yet available, the practices of Disney Springs (opened May 20) can provide some clues. For example, tables at Trail’s End will likely be spaced further apart and the menu modified to eliminate buffet lines. Evening fireworks could be on hold for a while, and even the nightly campfire show may be in question.
